Patrick Roy was born in Sainte Foy, Quebec, Canada on Octobre 5, 1965. Sainte Foy is a suburb of Quebec City. He started playing hockey when he was six. He didn't start out in net though. When one of his neighborhood kids injured his leg, Patrick tryed playing goalie. He never returned to being a skater. He went on to play in junior and midget leagues. Roy dropped out of school in his junior year of high school. He went on to play in the Quebec junior league for the Granby Bisons. That year, he learned how to take a loss and the joy of winning. He was named the top goaltender of the league.
Roy was a fourth round pick for the Montreal Canadiens in 1984. In that season, he was sent down to the minor league team called the Sherbrooke Canadiens as the 3rd string goalie. When his first string goalie took off for the birth of his child, and his second string had equipment problems, Roy stepped in net. He won 10 of 13 playoff games that year and led his team to the Calder Cup.
During Patrick's rookie season (85-86), he led the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup. He had a 1.92 average goals per game in the playoffs that season. He also won the Conn Smythe trophy and was voted the MVP. He won Montreal another Stanley Cup in the 1992-1993 season. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 1995.
He led the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup in 1996 against the Florida Panthers. He decided to retire from the NHL in May 2003. He ended his career with so many NHL records: career wins (551), career games played (1029), career playoff wins (151), only goaltender to record 200 wins with different teams, shutouts (23), minutes played (15,209), and consecutive wins in the post season (11 in 1993).
Patrick Roy will always be remembered as one of the greatest goalies to play hockey.

did you know that Roy was very supersticious and never stepped on the blue or red lines? He also wrote the names of his kids on his stick every game, stood by the blue line and looked at the goal posts and talked to them, and kept a game puck from all his shutouts of the season in his locker.
